Day 8/29 Days of Giving is…

a red-bellied woodpecker …

… in playful prose

with organic enclosure …

… evoking misunderstood harmony

culminating iridescent root …

… blinding enchantment takes flight

{no, this fever hasn’t made me delirious yet – keep reading silly!}

billowy seams frolick …

… wondrous carousels aplenty

rhythmic howling prevails ….

…  a nantucket gazelle, flushed

looser lighter silhouettes ….

… whisper of metallic hues

{ welcome to my collection of words }

Do you think that resembles poetry? Would you believe me if I told you it took me 2.5 minutes to type that, as I merely glanced through my collection of words. I allowed them to take flight and come together in their own unique way. I didn’t think about how it would sound, I didn’t care if it made sense. I sought the imagery. I craved the omigosh-im-flloating-above-the-world-anything-is-possible feeling they leave me with. I wanted my tongue to dance as they were spoken. Tell me, in your view – did I achieve that?

I am often astounded by those who don’t see the art within words. The magic they create. The vivid images they arouse in our minds.

Words, are an invaluable creative tool.

You don’t have to consider yourself a writer, to use them. To be inspired by them. To collect them.

I collect words. Do you?

poemcrazy

Today’s giveaway is (you may have guessed it),  one of my favorite books – Poemcrazy by Susan Goldsmith Woolridge. Regretfully, it’s not a signed copy – while I probably could have written her & asked, I was far too excited and hopelessly impatient (yes, i am THAT girl who peeks at gifts if given the chance) to share and opted to purchase a copy of this for the winner. That’s love folks.

Poemcrazy: Freeing Your Life With Words: invites the readers into a realm where poetry is accessible, where poems are moments of discovery that often arrive unexpectedly (in parking lots, at the grocery store, on walks) and makes ordinary lives extraordinary.

Susan Wooldridge plays with language as she shows how to create “wordpools”, helping the reader to understand that we are all immersed in an ocean of words used but largely ignored. The reader learns to create images, begins to develop metaphor, and gradually moves into “dreamsense” where an exploration of who we are in poems carries us to deeper levels within.

Wooldridge shares stories of how she and others discovered their own poems through delightful and often amusing vignettes of her life and experiences as a writer. In practice sessions through Poemcrazy, Wooldridge demonstrates how to craft poems using a poet’s tools such as journal writing, imagery, comparison, exaggeration, awareness of detail, and playful juxtaposition. Poemcrazy is a wonderfully original and motivating addition to any literary or writer’s reference shelf! — Midwest Book Review

I want each & every one of you to find a way to be mesmerized by language. words. letters. I want you to experiment without fear. I want you to put them together, and take them apart. I want you to open your eyes to the world that surrounds you – and look, reallllllly look at the words you could be collecting. The words you should be collecting. I want you to see the difference within your creative ventures once you do.

I want you to play. To collect words. To be inspired.

This book is nothing shy of inspiring. It’s for those who write. It’s for those who think they can’t write. It’s for those who aren’t inspired to write. It’s for those who have no time. It’s for those who have all the time in the world. It’s for anyone. There is something within these pages – that will free you from any creative stumbling block you may encounter.

Poemcrazy Journal - p. 6

It will change how you see yourself. How you see the world that so gloriously surrounds you. You will breathe it in and savor it. It won’t be a chore. You will be grateful, that you can honor your creativity in a minute. Maybe two. Maybe longer. That’s the beauty of it – it’s up to you.

It’s late, I’m exhausted – and I find it ironic that the giveaway dealing with writing – is perhaps, one of my worst written entries ever. Ah life, gotta love it! It should however tell you, just how excited I am to share this. To buy one of you a copy.

To inspire each of you, to start a journal with your collection of words too. You can see mine here.

  2. I stumble over words & this book sounds like it could help me. I am learning that it’s helpful to put concepts, words on paper before I start a painting. But, I need to do this more. I’m also learning that it can be helpful to write out thoughts during the process of a painting… especially when it stalls out because it went in a direction different than I originally perceived it.
This year I have been thinking on these words a lot:
Faith, Hope, Love. Lately I’m more focused on Hope.
That being said, I HOPE to start a new series very soon.

  4. Words I love (and there are oh so many): meadow, caress, sensual, peace, dream, glisten, serendepity, twinkle, giggle, chortle (I love that one!), joy and who can leave out the one that everything in life is all about: LOVE.

I love to read and to write; words have always had such a huge part in my life because of those two deepest of joys in life to me. I adore devouring books, writing in my journals and my blog(s), practicing my handwriting (still, at 43, I do this) and writing poetry. Words, ah, lovely words.

    Peace & Love,
    ~Barb~

  12. I like to create my own words. So often a standard word just doesn’t fit. A few that I use regularly are ‘pumble’ or ‘pumbling’ – the action a badger makes when it runs (a badger pumbles rather than runs), ‘gooby’ a word used to describe something revolting, e.g. during a horror film when someone has their head chopped off it is gooby. It is also used as an exclamation on seeing a revolting act (‘Oh, gooby!). My favourite is ‘lumpicious’ – deliciously lumpy, which can refer to people or things – especially chocolate chip ice cream. So now you all know quite how insane I am ….. :o)

If you could only see the definitions!!!!!

    Have a very artful day!

  15. Very cool idea. I’m always looking for new (to me) words and I suppose collecting words mentally. You’ve inspired me to actually collect them in a book beginning January1 – a fun New Year’s resolution. Many thanks!

  24. Well as old as I am you’d think I’d have more words under my belt….now belts for this ripe sized lady!!! Tis a wondrous time when we share all the beautiful around us as well as what comes from within. My foundness for words became a real problem when what’s commonly called *FIBRO FOG* took up space in my brain….rolling around gathering up so many words and spitting out what didn’t make a whole lot of sense…..could it be there’s such a thing as Crazywords book up there hiding in that brain??? Gee, my mind sometimes goes off on a tangent because it’s frustrated when trying to find the correct word to us…..I am thinking flowers, and apples will spill out like a babbling brook. And at the very moment I see the water rising in the sink…yep, there it goes over the top like a hug waterfall up in the mountains….there is no rhyme nor reason other than the words are up there wanting out at the correct moment in time, but it hits a bump when it spills from my tongue!!!!
    Wow this was really fun..ehehehe

I became ill; I was shot to pieces because of the words and actions of others. Trauma happened. I dissociated and struggled to survive. Life happened even after trying to end it. I breathed, I wrote.
I was pain so I bled to show people who I was.
I wrote because the life I live now, where I can smell the lavender and use words to interact with others, is an extra life. I wrote my book, and held myself in my own hands, remade from the pieces, linked together again but always aware of the power of words to harm and heal.

  33. Dear Chrysti, how can you say this was one of your worst entries? Good heavens! I heard your voice so clearly and the enthusiasm vibrates off the screen, sending contagious particles of light and love of the written word out into cyber space.

I love words – always have – and love to write. I express myself so much better through the written word than through speech. Yet I never thought of a word journal. What an excellent idea! I know mine is likely to end up with all sorts of clustering diagrams in it as I explore all the dangling threads of thought that are associated with each word. If I could draw or paint, then there would likely be spontaneous images popping up beside the words too. I can imagine interesting collages that might be inspired by pages of jotted words. Ah yes, this was an awesome post and just what I needed to read today.

Yesterday was a melt-down for me, starting normally enough with memories and thinking how much more intense memories can seem at this time of year. Bittersweet – that was the word I used, thinking about that and about all the bad news that has come my way over the last two weeks about friends who are having serious health problems and two deaths of elderly friends. While I was examining all this the rational part of my mind, I was thinking it would make a good blog entry. But I never got there. Life intruded rudely with little things going awry (now that’s an interesting word, I think) until the cumulative effect was tears and then anger that I’d lost control of my emotions. Laughable to think of right now but not then.

So I need a bit of inspiration today and found it here. The book you’ve described does sound wonderful. I’d love to be the winner and if I’m not that’s okay too because I’ll go track it down.

Some words for you today. I jotted down those that first popped into my head after reading your entry. Nothing too fancy here; no particular order:

    bittersweet – love that dichotomy
    reminiscence
    whisper
    opalescence – so visual!
complimentary – a cluster might look at complimentary as in a freebie; and as in offering a favorable opinion. My mind is already doing the branch off from complimentary product sample intended to form a favorable opinion.
glistening – seeing that whole “frosted windowpanes, candles gleaming inside” image
    awry

    bittersweet reminiscence
    whispering opalescence
    complimentary glistening awry

    Almost a poem. Lol

    Hugs,

  36. gorgeous, droplets, icy, liquefying, lugubrious, ephemeral, bounty…this is a great idea to get started, it’s crazy how your mind just starts and then keeps going on that track.

  37. Words are like jewels I dig through and revel in, pick up by the fistful, alternately hoarde and scatter, spread out to shine in the sun, and use to embellish the story that my life is, the narrative I wear like a crown.

    Currently loving nature words:

Blade, bract, clingstone, conifer, freestone, midrib, palmate, rootstock, shale, azurite, soapstone, bitumen, loosestrife, toadflax, chicory, riverbed, alluvial, delta, rill, downwelling, equinox, perihelion….

  38. Words? Love them, especially in the context of quotes (which I collect). Do quotes count for the contest? Hope so…
-“The human mind, once expanded to take in a new idea, never goes back to its original size.” (Oliver Wendell Holmes)
-“Research tells us fourteen out of any ten individuals likes chocolate.” (Sandra Boynton)
-“Fear will eat holes in your heart and leave you shivering naked in a corner of your mind.” (Molly Anderson-Childers)
    – “Our heads are round to allow our thoughts to change direction.” (Francis Picabia)
-“To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” (Joseph Chilton Pearce)
    – “Usually it’s a lot easier to nod as if you agree with someone than it would be to explain why you don’t.” (unknown)
-“Keeping house is like threading beads on a string with no knot at the end.” (unknown)

    Hope you enjoy these!
    Cheers
    Mary Anne

  40. lush, resplendent, glorious

I’m more a collector of quotes and odd phrases than just words, and I love to pair them with photographs in my journal. I have heard of the Poemcrazy book, and will definitely put it on my library list, unless I’m the fortunate winner of the draw! ;-)

  41. In my family, words, especially names evolve and change. For example, our little dog, Angel, becomes Angel Pangle, then eventually just sometimes, Pangles. My daughter, Holly, was a messy child, so we called her Messy Marvin from the commercial of the time. So that became Harvin Marvin and now just Harvin. These are simple examples. The evolution continues at times to the point I can’t remember the derivation.

My brother has certain words that he doesn’t like the sound of. Not sure why words would bother him, but this came to light when we were teenagers. I, of course, made a point and still do, of using the words often around him:)
The words: Solo & Ensemble(I was in the band and this was a competition we entered), Great Expectations(was playing on Masterpiece Theater at the time) and , heck, there is one other that escapes me at the moment. I think it is portfolio.

And a bit of found word poetry from the first altered book I ever started:

    Full moon,
    Wary sleep,
Float past in silver night mist,
    Wait for another day’s illusions.

  42. Crisp,blue,cozy,love,friendship,bonfires,memories,dancing,

  44. I often incorporate text in my collages.
Yes I believe that a picture can be worth a thousand words, but often inserting words can lead the viewer in a new direction.

  45. well, I am sorry to say that my words tonight are only angry and frustrated as the computer was picked up from the shop and it still has the virus in it. Even though, I have spoken to the tech several times in the last 24 hours who has assured me the virus is gone…it isn’t…it is affecting internet explorer.
    …so my flowing words:

gusts of anger blast past me, and around me
causing me great anguish and leave me with a feeling of aloneness

wishes of soothing singing and children’s laughter come to mind, and a need for a sheltering hug!

    How’s that?

    LOL

    Susan

PS…I am actually a published poet ( not for money, but still)

  46. I don’t collect words. I do marvel at them, and I often think, “Oh, that’s a great word!” But then, at times like these, I can’t bring them to mind.

My love of words has more to do with stringing them together… using them to communicate as well as possible, finding ways to express the inexpressible, even. I’ve always loved words, and I tend to repeat the same sentiment over and over again until I hit on the right combination of words.

I am told this can be excrutiatingly annoying. I tend to do it less as I get older. But my 2-year-old daughter is taking over where I left off. I can tell she’s a lover of words also. I’ll have to remember to indulge her when she rephrases something ten different ways just to listen to the sound of it.

    Words I’ve always liked:
endoplasmic reticulum, medulla oblongata, cerebellum (thanks to my medical background)
mystery, magical, enchanted, buttery, snuggle, and something I heard on TV “absotively posilutely”

I have some words collected and a few quotes as well. I have tried writing a little. I always rhymed things when my kids were little. I once made up my own tongue twister: gory, bloody bug guts. (we were driving and the bugs were thick).
I love to read. I used to go to the library and pick out the fattest books I could find. Reading is one thing I look forward to when school is out for the summer.

  53. I have a file of words… incase I need them to make a ransom note page!

I have a note book of quotes I have collected.

a small collection of books of poems

I teach a scrapbooking class and have list of inspiration words I share they are trigger words that they could use later when they have a creative block.

  62. here’s a list of words written just after awakening from a dream, listed in the order i wrote them….

    Riding the bus.
Several seats behind, to the side of me
    Glowing black women are smiling,
    Laughing, humming a tune.
Something is said, adviserly to one
    About relationships and the heart.
Another begins to sing in response.
    Deep voiced. Full song.
Her spirit soars and touches everyone.
She is in herself, deeper and complete as
    The music grows.
There is no other sound or thought
    Or emotion, but hers.
    We all know the words,
    The meaning.
    We recognize it from some
    Other past shared by all.
But she, without bravery, bravado or conscious of self,
    Sings aloud.
    Almost a jubilee.
    Almost a hymn.
    Almost a prayer.
The song ends. She has transformed.
Once unremarkable – accept as youth –
To a mature woman of indefinable age.
Someone thinks they recognized the bluesy song,
    not heard in years.
~ you know the one. ‘she’ used to sing it way back when ~
    The woman laughs.
    ~ That’s me child.
    I ain’t gone, just forgotten.
    But you’ll remember me now,
When ever you hear my song. ~

I call it “Dream” of course

I am a wordsmith each day as I teach my 4th grade students to explore written language!

  77. I’ve never thought about collecting words, but I’ve been a reader all my life, and the better written a book is, the more I love it. And I love dictionaries. LOL!

So, I guess I need to start a word collection: create, inspire, art, imagine.

  82. i’ve arrived here through the wonderfully inspiring suzi blu. she’s helped me open new doors for myself, given me permission to create and just be. and i am loving this new creative me who loves to hold a paint brush and mix paper, fabric and other wonderful bits and pieces in the same creation. during all of this and for many months now, i’ve had whisperings going on in my head about writing, writing poetry of all things! me?! i’ve not been brave enough to pick up a notebook and write anything down… yet. i’m partnered to a guy who has too many words in his head and so have always considered my meagre vocabulary rather inadequate and have never believed my contribution was worth giving. but i think the universe is now shouting at me, it’s given up on the whisperings, for here i am looking at this book!?! maybe i should get myself a notebook?? sorry to ramble! hugs, joolz xx

  85. There is some synchronicity (1st word for you!) going on here… wherever I go this book seems to be popping up. I do lack confidence in how I write, so I think I may NEED this book :)

So, a few more words for you… (I think I just like the sound of these)

    avarice
    plop
    gyrate
vita (Italian for life – as in la dolce vita – the good life)
    Onomatopoeia
    Sensuous

  86. I constantly get words stuck in my head, maybe I just like the way they sound. I’m always making up weird nicknames for my daughter and husband. Asking them, “Are you my monkey chicken sock?” And the nicknames change every day. It’s fun to play with words that way. I’ll have to start writing them down, writing down the lovely and the silly words. Thank you, this is a lovely entry that you wrote and many are inspired to respond.

  87. murmur
    verbose
    limpid
    melancholy
    morose
    giddy
    tease
    murky
    sauna

…for some reason all of these words came to mind as words that strike me as entirely appropriate signifiers, visually, tactilely, and acoustically (regardless of whether “tactilely” is a word or not…). And actually… add acoustically to that list!

  89. Hi Chrysti:

I have been keeping an artist’s journal for several years now. This past summer, for the first time, I started adding words.
Having completed a collage filled with maps, pages from an old geography school text and bits of handmade paper. I started writing on the opposite page:
(keep in mind that we drive three days to get to our cottage)

You are here. Åfter three days on the road, in a van full of Mexican pottery, art supplies, suitcases, three people and one dog, you are here. The place you come back to, summer after summer, you are here. To a lake that is so full of memories that sometimes it seems it cannot hold them. The power and the mystery – what brings you back? You are here – memories of sun-filled days, picking wildflowers, blowing bubbles from the dock – you are here….

Anyway, it was great to be writing again. Åt one time, I earned my living with my words as a newspaper reporter…but that was many years ago.

  90. I would love to be able to be part of this. I have never done one of these types of projects before, but I love the idea, and I want to continue the spirit of giving, and I would so love to win this give away!
