Day 7/29 Days of Giving is…

…ok, promise not to get angry with me

but today’s giveaway, well..

.. i totally am gonna cheat

i have to ….

…. well, i suppose i don’t actually have to

but i’m gonna, because it’s actually responsible of me …

{insert applause here}

… man, whomever that proverbial ‘they’ is

hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head ….

… when it rains, it friggin pours

unless you look at my blog ….

…. which is magically snowing – a nifty feature

at any rate i’m having daily issues with my oh-so-soon-to-be-fired-webhost ….

….. trying to transfer to a new one without interruption to the store

finishing my new site along with internet connection issues ….

…. and today my fancy schmancy printer decided to go berzerko, and i can’t do prints

so basically, all my work stuff is hitting the proverbial fan ….

…. wow …. i sure like the word proverbial eh?

i’m not telling you this for sympathy or anything ….

… it’s just part of life

granted, an extremely irritating part of life …

… but nonetheless an inevitable part of it

omigosh!!! my cat Sophie is trying to climb into this small opening of a big box

it’s hysterical! ….

where was i? sorry.. she’s a trip

yeah, anything technology related in my life seems to have this wounded inner child

… so due to time constraints

that those pesky technology gods bestowed upon me …

… i am almost-ashamed to admit i am cheating today

how you ask? …

Well I’m kinda re-doing a giveaway I already did. See, 100 of you didn’t enter the fabulous Cloth, Paper, Scissors (omigosh this cat is so bad – shes a nut tonight!) Studios contest – so I only drew 1 winner. Shame on those who didn’t partake in the fun! Which leaves me with this beautiful extra copy and a blog post already written.

So, go back and read that if you haven’t already. Then return here. I am changing a bit of the contest portion up.

Here’s the nitty gritty on entering to receive this copy:

  • Answer this  “If you were a tree, what would be carved into your trunk?” and/or tell us your favorite studio organizing tip. If all else fails answer this: Peanut Butter or Jelly?
  • Feel free to do a lil more schmoozing by lying through your teeth and saying by far my studio is the best in the issue, much less the world.
  • Do this by: Monday, December 15th
  • Spread the word. Enter Day 0 & Day 6
  • Check out the first batch of winners!

Here’s to hoping the technology gods were far kinder to you today!

And the first batch of winners are….

Since the technology gods have been frowning upon me all week (and today they apparently decided to unleash their wrath) … I’m gonna keep this as to the point as humanlyno make that as Chrysti-ly possible. Chatting aimlessly, is what Chrysti’s do best. Or sumthin’ like that….Heck if i know.

Here’s the scoop:Winners need to contact me within the next 5 days by emailing me at khryctee[at], or leaving another comment here – with the correct email to notify them. I’ll need your mailing addies by then or else the beloved prize in question gets shipped off to the runner-up. And, just in case the runner up has a bad case of not-claiming-giftitis, then I will merely redraw a name. Someone, somewhere will want it badly enough :-)

Didn’t Win? Keep trying! Really, there are even more amazing prizes heading your way… and there may even be days where everyone – yes like every single person – who enters who will be a winner. How’s that do for something to look forward to? I thought you’d like it!

Ok, the hard part — and also the kind of fun part — the prize recipients! Doesn’t that sound nicer? We’re all winners, even if the prize eludes us.

“A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.”
-Larry Bird

(I so wish I could give everybody copies though!)

Oh! In case you were curious; receipents are not-so-scientifically-selected using one of those handy generator thingies found online. Noone has found a way to bribe me yet. Not saying it can’t be done, but ya know — it’s gotta be a realllllllllllllllllllly good offer. An in with the technology gods would be great…

Even though the drawings on the original posts are closed – I still think they are worth a read – especially the comments. Amazing discussion, laughs & communities have been forming. It’s a wondrous feeling!

Day 5/29 Days of Giving is…

as i opened this to blog today…

…one word instantaneously sprang to mind

… you inspire me, truly inspire me

do i tell you all that enough?

…. for those who may be having a day, where they doubt their value

please know, I cherish you … even if we haven’t formally ‘met’ …

…  wow! the smiles, and much needed laughter you gifted me with

have been a godsend today! …

… every time i craved a bit of refuge from the pain

i popped on here to read a few of your comments…

…and left feeling brighter, lighter, and a bit happier

but i have to say…

… some of you? have horridly bad taste in jokes & puns!

which, tickles me …

…’cause i love a really good bad joke

almost as much as people falling

..isn’t that terrible of me?

back to your horridly bad taste… we totally need help…

like serious help.

ha – that’s what creating is meant for!…

… i found the start of my healing within creating & the humor today

thank you, for providing me with a safe, smile filled place to visit …

… which actually, unintentionally leads me to today’s giveaway

focusing on another one of my havens….

…. go ahead, guess

hint… every artist or createatarian needs one….

My Studio

If you guessed my studio, you hit the proverbial nail on the head! Have you seen my studio yet? If not, clicking here will to take you that photoset on Flickr, I’d love to have you visit!

And no, I am not giving my studio away – I may be a lil’ nutso, but I am not quite THAT far gone… (yet anyway). However, I’d be willing to trade for a larger stand alone cottagey shed, withcustom cabinetry located in the middle of the woods… My studio isn’t much, but it’s mine. I did the best i could, with what I have; it suits my needs. We all may dream of bigger & better — but this truly does suffice for me.  It is the room that houses tiny treasures, harbors big dreams and allows me a refuge from the rest of the world. It’s the one place I find a comforting sort of solace. It is the one place I can truly just be.. me.

I talk more about it in the current issue of Cloth,Paper, Scissors Studios (p. 45). Which is my own personal favorite new magazine of the year. I was soooo bummed that I couldn’t meet the deadline when Cate asked me to take part in Issue 1 … so needless to say, I was thrilled when I got a second chance! Plus, I got to share the spotlight with friends like Lia and Tiffany … Lia & i had a few phone calls where we obsessed on how obsessive we were. It was nice to know I wasn’t alone! Her studio is super cool, be sure to check it out in there too (p. 49).

What really sets Cloth,Paper, Scissors Studios apart from other studio type publications is that it doesn’t just focus on these lavish, dream spaces most of us will never have in our lifetimes. It shows a tremendous amount of real spaces with real people. Everyday folk like you & I. Heck, some of the spaces aren’t even studios – they are corners of a living room, a closet — it’s just jam packed with ideas, inspiration, and solutions that anyone can apply. It’s not often you find practical and beautiful all wrapped up in one pretty package ya know. If that’s not enough – it also has tutorials, and projects geared towards your space and organizing tips & tricks.

 Chrysti's Magazine Files

I even have a lil’ project in the online extras – simple, stylish magazine ( and other things) files. Super easy. Super cute. If you make some, be sure to show me how they came out! For the curious – I scored the bases at an Ikea. I have another set (shown in other pics) of these plain-jane cardboard magazine holders that I covered with color copies of ephemera, mostly personal family documents and letters from my grandparents. It’s beyond comforting to see their writing daily!

When I open my new site — I will be adding a regular column on studio organizing, since it’s one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. You can check out these past blog posts of mine, for some tips I have already put out there.

To prove to you just how awesome this special publication is — I will be giving away not one, but two copiesof this in today’s giveaway — that is, if we get over 100 entries/comments. So make sure to tell your friends, so two of you can be lucky winners. And hey, why not let us see your space in one of the future issues? The amazing crew over there is accepting submissions. Pokey talks about it on her blog here.

You can read about my favorite supplies in the issue — but I thought I’d share some of my other favorite things with you too. For sentimental reasons – I lovingly treasure the tacky, I-would-never-in-a-million-years-choose-this-for myself, poorly made, dust magnet of a curio cabinet as it was my Grammas. Each & every time I look at it; I am instantly taken back to the day she bought it – how this amazingly big, heartwarming smile adorned her face, the pride she had when her doll collection filled it, how she lit up when she’d show it off; it was as if she had purchased the Taj Mahal… and I am instantly inspired every time I sneak a glance. I want that emotion and pride to come forth in my work, which is why it’s placed in my studio.

My big cozy chair and a half was an amazing score during a going out of business sale. Without a doubt it’s where you’ll find me curled up to read, paging through magazines, and sometimes I even journal there. My iPod is almost always blaring in my studio, as music and the brightness of my room just infuse me with an artistic energy I can’t find elsewhere.

Chrysti's Studio  Chrysti's Studio - Close-Ups

I can’t leave out my charm chain that is draped over my chandelier either. It’s a storybook without words; as it holds treasures from my travels, memories of my childhood, and is filled with gifts that have been given to me, or I gave to myself! Each charm holds a value to me that is beyond measure and it’s truly the stuff that dreams are made of.

No offense to y’all: but I’d rather be in my studio than blogging tonight – so here’s how to enter:

  • Leave a comment on this post, answering one ( or both ) of these questions “What do you love about your creative space?” and/or “What would you most like help organizing in that space?” If you don’t care for one of those, then merely just do a lil schmoozing by lying through your teeth and saying by far my studio is the best in the issue. We all need a lil’ denial don’t we?
  • Do this by: Tuesday, December 9th. Winner or Winners will be announced then!
  • Still time to enter these giveaways too! Day 0, Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, & Day 4

FREE trip to New Orleans!

That’s right — how would you like to take a free trip to New Orleans?

Even better yet — what if I told you there shall be no fretting over tedious packing, carrying heavy luggage, airline surcharges, or even gas cost? No budget needed for dining out or worries of what to do with pets & children.

You must be wondering why or how by now – well DIY City Mag recently launched their new New Orleans issue! Go grab a cup of tea, coffee or whatever your favorite vice is & take a gander over there to peruse the lovely pages. It really is like taking a virtual vacation. Don’t worry, it’s free to read online – and I am positive you will find oodles of inspiration and artistic discoveries within it.

 Published in DIYCity Mag!

They were even nice enough to feature my inspiration board (an older version then what I have up now) and one of my self-portraits in it. I’m so glad they asked me to be a part of this, as I may not have heard of them otherwise – now you won’t have that excuse! Lastly, PLEASE take a look at my inspiration board on Flickr to see the talented artists who created the art which adorns it: they deserve the recognition too.

So whatcha waitin’ for? Go visit New Orleans!

Chrysti – who is patiently hoping for a Raleigh Edition! (That’s a big ol’ hint Deb & Wendy!)

P.S. 4 days in a row … yup, count ’em – 4 – now I have posted. Where’s my prize?

P.P.S. Today was a rather rough one for moi. I did however notice how pretty the rust on my antique hardware is in my bathroom; and I did rediscover the simple joys of my pets – how my Sophie’s neck twists just so, or how big Callie’s eyes get in excitement when she is pet, how Morgan just lives to make me happy, and the tender kisses my older dog Sadie gives. I found myself grateful for the simple joy a fine tipped pen brings me as well.. taking the time to focus on the simple pleasures, truly helped ease my otherwise foul mood a bit. Did you try find the extra-ordinary in the ordinary today? Be sure to look around, and enter my contest!

Cover Girl, Contest & Cherished Surroundings

I think this is one of things I really, truly thought I had announced here… yet, somehow, I just hadn’t. (Dontcha just hate when that happens?)…

Despite my delay, I am extremely proud to announce that I was fortunate enough to have my photo chosen to be on the cover of the Summer 2008 Issue of Life Images magazine, and as if that’s not enough, I have yet another photograph inside the magazine !!!! If you haven’t already seen it, be sure to take a look!

I dunno. It makes me feel all fancy & stuff. Gotta frame that baby now.

I couldn’t resist taking the cliche shot of my cover on the newstands at Barnes & Noble. Doesn’t it just pop amidst the sea of magazines? That secretly thrilled me. Wish I hadn’t used my cellphone’s not-so-good cam though. Can you believe there was no red carpet laid out for me? Noone even know who I was. Sigh. The NERVE of some people! (kidding folks, really!)

I love how Life Images takes these tiny, little snippets of life — usually things we take for granted,or somehow deem insignificant… and makes them… well … a bit more noticeable.. you know, where the ordinary suddenly transforms into extraordinary. I kinda think that’s what life is all about.

With that thought — I’m holding another contest.

The winner will receive an 11″ x 14″ matted print of that pretty photo & a big ol’ pack of goodies to use in your art.

Your Mission? Should you choose to accept it…

To take a few minutes in the upcoming week and really, truly, try to breathe in the world around you. Try to choose surroundings you find yourself in frequently — see if you can’t spot something new to appreciate. Turn just a part of your otherwise ordinary day – and make it extraordinary! Bonus points if you take photos to capture the moment, create a journal entry around it, or write up a love list. I am challenging you to notice the things you usually pass by; the things you typically take for granted. We have so many gifts in this life — we could all stand to appreciate them a bit more. Don’t worry, I plan to do this myself – daily – this week too.

So, to qualify for the contest:

Blog about your experience trying this, and yes shamelessly link to me, promoting this contest too. If you don’t have a blog, now is a good time to start one!

– Come back to this post, and link to your post in the comments. I’ll be posting links & summaries of all your entries when I announce the winner; and announcing the story behind this photo then too.

– Do this no later then Monday, August 11th 2008.

Have fun with it!

I’m always amazed at the inspiration y’all provide me – thank you – each of you – for continuing to allow me that honor.

( yes, I have blogged 3 days in a row now… I think my groove just may be comin’ back on…)

An Enchanted Life

My Spread in Life Images!

Is it shameless to say I don’t tire of seeing my work in print?

Because I don’t. Not for one little minute.

Every time I see my work in a new publication, I turn into that 6 year old little girl whose bright eyes just gleam and burst wide open with pure amazement & childish delight. My insides get all filled up with what i imagine to be prettly lil’ butterflies, and I end up spilling over with contagious excitement. You remember that feeling dontcha? When the world seems undeniably grand and not even one little thing seems unattainable or out of reach. It’s an inspiring thrill, to get back even the smallest piece of that innocent wonder.

There’s just that magical something about seeing my work transformed within pages of a magazine, or a book.  Somehow, it takes what I think is ordinary… into ex-tra-ordinary… and I find myself saying… ‘heh… i really did that!’ This, my friends… is no exception.

To see a slightly different variation of my Autumn’s Enchanted Forest  photograph featured on Stampington’s website, and in the Life Images magazine simply made my day today. Naturally, memories of taking that photo came flooding back as well, and I found myself smiling an almost maniacal grin… all to myself …. while paging through the magazine.

Autumn's Enchanted Forest

The day I took that picture, was awesome … i mean truly…just… awesome in the fullest sense of the word. It was breathtaking.. and had left me speechless. (a small miracle if you ask some people) Truth be told, I never thought my photos of that forest did it justice; I felt so connected to that piece of the forest…. how could a lens possibly capture and convey that?

Go get yourself a copy, and check it out. There is page after page of inspiring photographs, words, and journal entries that will leave you feeling a bit refreshed and ready to… well… just live. Not just make your way through a day — but ready to experience life. Living, truly living. Glorious!

I’ll leave you to go do that as I wrap myself in memories of Pittsburgh in the fall, the woods behind my parents home that were my very own Terabithia, playing our version of Pac-Man through paths in the leaves (remember that Heidi?), homecomings, bonfires, warm tea with Gramma and oh-so-much more.

So what if it’s Spring? It’s never too early to experience Autumn’s Enchantment.

A Few of My Favorite Things…

“When the dog bites… When the bee stings…
When I’m feeling sad..”

It’s been one of those weeks.. that the VERY moment you wake up…
it seems as if…  E V E R Y   –   single   –   small   –  tedious   –   frustrating annoyance
that you can possibly imagine starts to unfold…
and before you can even realize it..
you find yourself stomping around, grumbling, moping, sulking & muttering curse words under your breath …
(or in some moments, screaming them at the top of your lungs)

Today I decided to step back..
take a deep breath…
and just focus on the little things in life I do so enjoy….
Please, allow me to share some with you!

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
