The Perfect Cookies (Felt) -4

Have you ever noticed how wonderfully supportive our not-so-lil art community is? Really, think about it…it’s not often a large diverse group – made up mostly of women – can get together and selflessly support one another. Yet, somehow we do this, and do it well….day in & day out.

We rally around those in need, those who are sick, those who are grieving, those who are just struggling to make it day to day.

We laugh at one another’s mishaps, airhead moments, and stories. We are human, and find the humor in it.

We share who we are, not just as artists but as people.

Despite our personal taste, we have a way of recognizing and appreciating any art form, finding the beauty in anything.

We share our knowledge, our talents, our gifts — we share ourselves… and we give. We give to one another, to those in need, we give what we can, when we can.

The Perfect Cookies (Felt) -7

It never ceases to amaze me, how we connect through our art, through our blogs, through our groups.. it is a never ending cycle, that I am grateful for daily. I don’t think y’all realize, just how much you have changed my life, or the power one small supportive comment or note has to me. I dont’ take the time to thank you all nearly as often as i should, but I am eternally grateful.

What’s all that got to do with anything?

The Perfect Cookies (Felt) -5

It has been a very frustrating few weeks for me recently, the surgery I had in February, was not successful…. basically, making it all for nothing …and leaving me pretty discouraged. Fortunately, I my to-do-book is so large, I have been able to keep my mind off of it & the never ending kindness that is shown to me through all of you, has helped me muster through as well.

Last year, I was horrid at blogging all i wanted to … this year, I intend to change that. I want to show off the gifts I receive, the RAK’s (Random Acts of Kindness), and truly acknowledge the generosity others have shown to me.

Guilt Free Sugar Cookies anyone?

The Perfect Cookies (Felt)

“A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand”

At the ZNE Tea Party, I had shown these adorable felt sugar cookies that I instantly adored, and when Sue Wickham (Please visit her!) offered to make me a few, I was brimming with excitement! Little did I know, she would send me a whopping dozen, and they would be better then I could ever imagine! — here, look for yourself! Yummy eh?

Jealous? You should be, these are divine!

I’m looking for the perfect way to display these, your ideas?

(I’m experimenting with a different way to post my blog entries today, in hopes that it will solve the formatting trouble I’ve been experiencing — thus not blogging as often)

I just wanted to take a quick moment today, to update everyone on my progress as I continue my recovery from surgery. This week, I am finally feeling HUGE relief from both the pain & swelling, I’m optimistic that from this point on recovery goes quickly and smoothly.. about 3-4 more weeks, and healing should be complete!

I can’t thank y’all enough for the thoughts, RAKs, emails & positive thoughts you’ve been sending my way! I’m jumping back in the game this week, focusing on my art, and getting my sites revamped, and up & running, so I’ll still be scarce! I will try and get all the things I have to blog about — up ASAP! Tutorials, new art, and a lot more!

The following came to me as a bulletin on MySpace today, not sure who the original source is ( anyone?) But I’d love to credit it properly. Definitely food for thought — and I’d love to hear yours!

Say NO to free Art!Author Unknown

“Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service. But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on craigslist to find them. And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street? Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you? If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane.

If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks? Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen? If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely.

So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them. Say NO to free art. And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free…please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

If you agree with the above important information, please pass it along. The more people know, the faster we can correct this.”

So, what do YOU think about that author’s post?

Yours in Art – Chrysti

Outta Commission- Surgery Tomorrow!

Ikes! It’s that time.. remember I mentioned there was a complication in my surgery last November? Well, they are finally fixing it.. tomorrow… well, more like in 5 hours or so.

Just wanted to let y’all know where I’ve been ( preparing).. and why I’ll be MIA this week :-) Please bear with me… as it’s inevitable I will fall even more behind on emails! (Yes! It’s  possible!)

I also wanted to send a big ol’ thank you to all those who have sent their good wishes my way! The continued kindness shown in the art community, never ceases to simply… well, wow me. You all really do rock! I’ll try to keep you posted on my progress .

Once I have recovered, my pieces at Etsy (my original art) will be marked back up to their normal prices or taken to a local gallery .. so if you were interested in any of those one of a kind pieces, now’s the time to snatch ’em up!

The store downsizing and clearance sale at my E-Bay store will end too – some items will be marked back up to their regular prices, some will disappear forever! There are some fabulous arty supplies awaiting you there, go ahead, give it a glance if you haven’t!

And again, thank you so very much for all your thoughts, prayers, and RAK’s (Random acts of kindnesses) … they mean the world to me, and words somehow always seem to fail the power in that. This has been a difficult period in my life, and all of your gestures, both small & big –continually make a difference in helping me adjust.

Time to take my fidgety, nervous….and otherwise anxious self to keep busy til i pass out!

Quick Surgery Update

Just a quick note to let y’all know i’m doing ok since my surgery Wednesday. There was a minor complication, so recovery is a bit riskier, and longer then expected.

I’ll be back in the swing of the things asap, in the meantime please excuse my slow replies, etc as i recover.

Quick Dental Update

I have no idea how in the last 2 weeks went from mildly chaotic, to I can’t get a grip! But it did, and I *think* things are slightly back in control now. If you missed my prior posts on the dental drama that’s been occupying my little life, click here & here.

So many people have written, inquiring about how the sedation dentistry appointment went on Tuesday, it’s easiest for me to update here then reply individually to all. (I have over 600 emails awaiting responses now, please don’t take it personally). Like anything, the appointment was a healthy balance of the good and the not so good. The dental team was not able to do all the work they planned, or that is needed. Truthfully, I’m still uncertain as to why… I remember very little of it. My appointment next Tuesday, should provide some clarity there.  The tooth that has caused the most pain, fortunately was the one they worked on. The pain from the root canal, is not even comparable to the searing pain it was causing previously. So, I am extremely grateful they were able to provide some relief.

“Pain is no evil unless it conquers us.”
~George Eliot

Originally uploaded by Nad.

As for the rest – well, they decided it would be best to treat me in the Operating Room, under General Anesthesia. Truthfully – this terrifies me, but I’m trying to remember the ultimate goal here, to receive treatment, and relief. The cost will be a considerable increase, and it’s still uncertain if they will work with me financially, or require payment in full. Ugh. As relieved as I am to find someone to work on me, the downfall to the clinic is that they are extremely disorganized. Finding a needle in a haystack is more likely then receiving a straight answer!

“Pain is weakness leaving the body.”
~Daniel R. Evans

So, all in all.. I still have some pain, though it’s minor compared to what it was before. I lost 2 days recovering from the sedation medication, all for one lil root canal. Ikes! Frustrating, but truly, I’m just grateful the worst toothache is gone. If the above quote is true – then I’m gonna be one strong chickie!

I actually have many other things to discuss with y’all…but other priorities need tending too first! You’ll be sick of me by the end of the week, I promise! Ha!

Self Discovery, Art for Sale & Grief

“What happens to a man is less significant than what happens within him”.
Louis L. Mann

I often find myself stopping, taking in a deep breath, and looking at a moment or a timeframe that has just passed in sheer wonder. Self-Discovery is amazing, unexplainable thing. We set out to perform a task, a seemingly ordinary one at that… and find that we landed at a destination we never knew existed. I believe, it’s what you do with that new realization that matters.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us”.
~ Emerson

I set out these last few days, to create art, purely for the purpose of selling it.. to raise the much needed medical funds my health (and sanity!) requires… While I accomplished a few finished pieces, what I gained was worth so much more. Once I let go of the “will it or won’t it sell“….”is this good enough” and all the other pebbles of negativity our inner critic throws at us… I just let go.. immersing myself in the creative process, and loving every moment of it. Though I was alone, I found that I was surrounded by warm memories of loved ones who have passed… Countless hours went by, and I emerged stronger. Discoveries, that for at least today I’m treasuring… and keeping to myself. Who better to share a secret with?

“The greatest oak was once a little nut who held its ground”
~Author Unknown

Here’s a few of the ACEO’s that I’ve created during that time… click the photo to see them larger, click the text beneath them to take you to their sale page. Whether you purchase any or not, I sincerely appreciate the look, and feedback on the pieces. And of course, I appreciate any bids as well!

That sweet, sweet child was my grandmother .. we believe she was around 2.5 years old when it was taken. I look at that, and I see her eyes .. a lil bit fearful, yet so full of hope too. She had no idea then, that her entire life would be like that as well. The trials she endured — amaze me. I respect her more then words could ever speak… and above all else, I miss her. I miss her dearly.. But alas, it was her time to fly.
