Today’s Creating Art Cards (Artist Trading Cards, ATC’s, ACEO’s) Tip!

Use Quality Materials – Especially for your base. There’s just something about using mat board as a base for Art Cards that enhances their beauty. It shows care, quality, and feels like a miniature work of art. Not to mention the stability benefits it has – it prevents your work from getting bent, looks wonderful on an easel and helps make your card a charming keepsake that will last. Take pride in your work, and let it show!

Mat-board scraps are perfect for bases – ask your local framers if they will give them to you, or sell them to you at low cost. Many will be happy to recycle these!

Come back tomorrow for another give-a-way and a new tip!

Acts of Kindness & All That Follows

“I endeavor to be wise when I cannot be merry, easy when I cannot be glad, content with what cannot be mended and patient when there is no redress.”
Elizabeth Montagu

I may have begun the day muttering not so kind words under my breath as I roamed the house taking note of all that needed done….that is, until I ran across this:

 Nancy Made me art!

Isn’t it absolutly gorgeous? The oh so talented Nancy created and sent me that amazing piece around my birthday (plus a bunch of goodies as well.. these collage sheets rock, go get yourself some!).. for me, lil ol me! Can you begin to imagine just how special I feel? It includes all the things that I love, and even a photo of my puppy! I had been meaning to share it here, but somehow time just escaped me. It struck me as wonderfully odd, how just in the moment I needed a smile the most, I was given one. A heartfelt gift never stops to continue giving. Much like the day it arrived, it delivered a desperate pick me up, and set the tone for the remainder of my day.

“Kindness in words creates confidence, kindness in thinking creates profoundness, kindness in feeling creates love.”
~Lao Tzu

Her one act of kindness, started a small chain of events in my little world today, and in retrospect it really is beyond amazing, how one little act of generosity can spark so many more. The good things in life really do pay themselves forward don’t they?

“Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.”
~ Scott Adams

I’ve been wanting to clean my studio room for some time now, so that I could hang the works of art I’ve been given, or have bought to inspire me.. the special piece Nancy created for me, inspired me to begin that oh so tedious process. ( I can’t wait to hang it!). I created a bunch of goodie bags & kits to send to those in this fabulous art community who continually support, and touch my life.. I filled a huge box with supplies, and treasures for friends who are starting on an art business venture here in NC. (Check out their fab list of classes!) I made a stack of art I will be giving away, and a ton of other small, yet significant things I won’t bore you with as the right words just escape me today.

I reluctantly left that room to pursue other tasks.. but the feeling I parted with, is one of peace, and content. That feeling one gets that words alone just can’t seem to portray.

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly

Mother Theresa

It will take some serious time to get my studio in order – but it no longer seems so daunting. In fact, it kind of excites me…who know what will occur as a result! So Nancy, If you’re reading this.. Thank You, so very much… for thinking of me, taking the time, and expense to create such a beautiful piece to me… I don’t think I can ever feel alone, or unappreciated now.. all as a result of your thoughtfulness — it truly is a gift that continues to give, and for that I’m forever grateful. You are an amazing soul, and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to get to know you. Not to mention lucky to own such a fantastic mixed media painting!

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Now go, do something kind for someone that doesn’t expect it. You never know just what it will inspire.

Try It Tuesdays: My Week 2 Results!

They see poetry in what I have done. No. I apply my methods, and that is all there is to it.”
Georges Seurat

So, I made time today to try the latest technique over at Try It TuesdaysWeek 2 is An Easy Transparency Alternative, and it only took me 20 minutes to do a bunch. I had done variations of this transfer previously with packing tape, but it’s seldom I am pleased with the result.. I really don’t care much for the shine on packing tape, or the limitations in it’s width.

“I don’t study; I create.”
Viktor Korchnoi

On this batch, I used Clear Contact Paper.. and I LOVE the results.. once it’s adhered to the surface it’s nearly  impossible to detect. A quality I seek in transfers as I want to look as if it’s a part of the artwork.. not just an element that was added. Besides, it allows me the freedom to create transfers of almost any size. I found that the better I burnished each image, the better the clarity of the transfer.

Laser printed images were used for almost all the transfers on the pieces you see below. Keep in mind, these are all works of mine in progress, notta one is completed. Further details are provided beneath each photo. I also did a few additional transfers with other image sources — something I’ll share with y’all later in the week. Matte Gel Medium was used to adhere all of these, burnishing the transfer well to the piece so it’s virtually seamless. Clicking on the image, will open a larger one in a new window.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
Pablo Ruiz y Picasso

All in all, I think I will use this transfer method in my altered art more frequently. Heat transfers are still my favorite, but they don’t work effectively on all surfaces, and can tend to be a lil bit too unpredictable for my taste. This method has less limitations. Thanks so very much Heather for exposing me to this again — I  may never have revisited this process otherwise!

That’s about all folks, if you have any questions.. just leave a comment and I’ll get back to ya ASAP!

Keep those answers comin’ in from earlier too, I am so enjoying your stories!

Artwords – Indulgence

in·dulge (n-d lj)
v. in·dulged, in·dulg·ing, in·dulg·es
.1. To yield to the desires and whims of, especially to an excessive degree.

The theme for this week’s Artwords challenge was Indulgence … and what a source of inspiration it was! Though, I am not completely happy with this piece… I do so love what it represents…

Clicking the photo below will take you to a new window, and larger photo. I’m working on a better photograph…

“Indulgence of the Soul”
8” x 8” Art Squared on Canvas
One of a Kind, Mixed Media Painting & Collage on Canvas
By Raleigh, NC Outsider Artist – Chrysti

I admit it…I indulge myself in small ways daily .. a Starbucks… a long bath…overpriced lip balm.. all truly wonderful little bright spots in my day.. but somehow, all those trivial, minute diversions, keep me from what’s truly important.. the nurturing, and indulgence of my soul… I find that so often, I’m running from moment to moment.. kinda like living a connect the dots puzzle .. that by the time the day has come to an end.. I have overlooked the things that heal me, touch me.. that transform me…

Well,  Enough is Enough!

Creating this piece, was a baby step for me.. a tiny step towards awakening, and acknowledging that inner part of me that needs as much as time, as much indulging as those I love, as much devotion as I give to my work, and the 101 other ways I stretch myself too thin. I lost myself in the making of this .. each stroke of the brush, line of the pen pushing me forward in my quest… It is my sincere desire, that it serves as a powerful reminder to indulge & nurture your own soul.

I will be putting this up for sale soon.. and will keep y’all updated when I do. But, for now … it will remain in my studio as a daily reminder of what it is I truly need to allow myself to indulge in.

Which bring me to my next announcement.. I find myself craving some ‘me’ time .. you know the kind, no phones…no computer…no people.. just pure, simple, chosen solitude.. my 32nd birthday is fast approaching (June 3rd) .. and I’m thinking, that’s just what I may do to celebrate … can anyone suggest some spots around or within a few hours of Eastern N.C.?

“The moment we indulge our affections, the earth is metamorphosed; there is no winter and no night; all tragedies, all ennuis, vanish,-all duties even.”

Authenticity, Life & It’s Process

To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end in life.
–Robert Louis Stevenson

So, here’s the deal…

I think we get sooo wrapped up in the final product sometimes, we lose sight of the process. It’s the process that heals, the process that soothes and invigorates, it is the process that is a reflection of your soul, your heart … and your mind. The process is where we gain the most wisdom, and hence.. arises the true value. It is the process, that I find most freeing.

Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply and vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, “This is the real me,” and when you have found that attitude, follow it.
–William James

If you could peek into my studio right now (you’d prolly call Molly Maid).. you’d see stacks of canvas’s, objects, books and papers all with intricate, layered, rich backgrounds … I’m absolutly addicted to creating these.

I wish I could tell you just what it is that captivates me about creating backgrounds.. they soothe me, and I could spend days just immersing myself into the process..

cut.. tear … glue…add layersremoving paint.. need more paint.. try something newstamp here.. add texture herewipe off there.. transfer hereoopshere too ..

You get the idea. It’s a challenging sort of random mundaneness.

Problem is, I just can’t seem to cover them up!

Everything we see is but a mirror of what we are.
— Gerald G Jampolsky

It’s not unlike life.

In fact, I think it’s an accurate reflection of my life. I am drawn to what it is we don’t see, the things the are true.. the facets of life that are bare, raw …and soaked in authenticity. The genuine. I look past what you first see, and find what lies beneath .. People, things, places .. are never just what they appear to be.. they are merely a carefully crafted image.

What I find exciting, sometimes scary and often eye-opening .. is … you guessed it .. the process … how that image came to be.

No matter what your work, let it be your own. No matter what your occupation, let what you are doing be organic. Let it be in your bones. In this way, you will open the door by which the affluence of heaven and earth shall stream into you.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

So what does all this insane rambling have to do with my latest piece?

100% Authentic – 8″ x 10″ on Canvas – One of a Kind – April 2006

While your eye is initially drawn to the woman (an altered image from a Teesha Moore collage sheet).. it’s the background of this mixed media collage & painting that tells the true story .. one I’ll let you tell yourself. What is it you see within it?

I’ve been drawn to birds, nests, and eggs for years now .. For me? They are strong symbols hope, re-birth, and the endless cycle of life.

This painting, much like the butterfly .. whose beautiful, outstretched, wings lend them freedom.. it’s a metamorphosis of sorts. It is authentic ..and never, ever truly complete.

The universe will pay you to be yourself and do what you really love.
–Shakti Gawain

Ok, Ok, that quote is a really poor attempt at subtly letting y’all know this is for sale on E-bay.

Will today be the day you decide once and for all to make your life consistent with the quality of your spirit? Then start by proclaiming, “This is what I am. This is what my life is about. And this is what I’m going to do. Nothing will stop me from achieving my destiny. I will not be denied!
— Anthony Robbins

You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your lips.

Now i’m off to “preach” with my life ..not my keyboard! – xoxo Chrysti

The birth of a piece…

Angels Walk Among Us
originally uploaded by ArtByChrysti

Angels Walk Among Us

I’ve received quite a few emails about the inspiration for this mixed media painting, so I thought I’d tell you a bit of the back story behind it…

When my life tends to feel chaotic and a smidge out of control.. I find myself reaching for my white & cream paints.. and creating a calm, monochromatic piece. The process is what I find most soothing … it’s messy, carefree, gratifying, and oh so easy to lose myself in!

On this particular day.. with this particular piece …I found myself yearning for strength.. I began thinking abut my grandmothers…. they were amazing women.. whose personal lives and stories are incredible within their own right (someday I’ll share) , their memories are constantly my source for wisdom, guidance and strength. The obstacles they overcame, and the grace they handled it with.. will never cease to amaze me…

And so it began… repetitiously cutting, pasting, painting, gluing layers & layers of ephemera…words that spoke to me, that I connected with.. photographs of women…all ages, all sizes, all different backgrounds .. strong women… the women of our past who shaped this beautiful world we live in ..and though a lot of these pieces cannot be seen within the piece.. they are a vital part of it.. it is a piece of strength, and wisdom… and a tribute to those who walked before us, whose lives intertwine with ours when we aren’t even aware… they are the angels that walk among us.

And there you have it.. a small glimpse of how this piece came into creation.. it’s currently for sale on ebay  (ends soon!!) if you’re interested, or to see more detail…click the photo, it will take you to flickr.. click all sizes, and view the original size for detail..

Artfully Yours.. Chrysti
